Breast reconstruction revision is usually needed if the original surgery left unsatisfactory results. Patients may experience lumps in the breasts, tightness in the chest, and overall discomfort or dissatisfaction with the aesthetic appearance of the breasts.

This corrective surgery can fix complications following breast reconstruction surgery. Problems from a failed reconstructive procedure can affect the breasts' health and appearance. Revision might be necessary if patients are not satisfied with the results. Other reasons can include infection or medical issues such as an implant rupture.

Complications tend to develop the longer the implants have been in the body. Healthy implants do not need replacement. However, surgery is necessary if the implant ruptures, migrates, or gets infected.

It is important to note that the more the skin is worked on, the higher the risk of more complications as the skin begins to lose quality. Complications are also much increased in patients with previous radiation therapy. A successful breast reconstruction revision procedure can provide proportional breasts and improved internal and/or external scarring. It can also improve capsular contracture.

Every reconstruction revision is tailored to the patient. Depending on the case, patients may need more than one procedure. The operation requires general anesthetic and usually lasts 2 to 4 hours. Soreness and swelling are usual side effects.

The revision procedure usually has a quicker recovery than the initial surgery. If patients struggle with discomfort and pain, their doctor can prescribe them pain relievers. Patients need to wear a surgical bra for a few weeks after the procedure for quicker recovery. They can return to their day-to-day activities within a week. They also must avoid any physical exercise or heavy lifting for two to three weeks. Patients can notice the results of the
procedure after 2-3 weeks.

As with most operations, a breast reconstruction revision has some risks. These can include infection and scarring.
