Jaw reduction aims to narrow and contour the jaw area, creating a more slender and feminine appearance. There are both surgical and non-surgical alternatives available for this process. These both aim to decrease the size of the jaw muscle or remove some of the jaw bone. Jaw shaving or V-line surgery is a surgical procedure that can reduce the jaw bone to create a more contoured shape.

This procedure can be combined with a genioplasty, in which specialists move the chin forward or backward to better balance the jaw and chin.

A typical jaw reduction surgery lasts for 1-2 hours. It is performed under general anesthetic. The surgeon will first create an incision on the inside of the mouth to minimize scarring. They use a laser or a micro saw to shave and remove the bone to create the final shape. The technique used differs for each patient. Surgeons decide based on the patients' facial structure and the desired goals. To create a V-shape the jaw is tapered down.

For patients who wish for a softer look, surgeons can reshape the back of the jaw. Sometimes, specialists also shave the chin bone, creating a sharper tip. Another option to achieve this result is the use of an implant.

A combination of several techniques is usually included to achieve the desired outcome. Once the procedure is completed, the incision is closed using dissolvable stitches. Doctors may insert drains to avoid fluid build-up.

The treatment usually has a downtime of 2 weeks. During this time, patients may experience significant swelling and bruising lasting for about a month. Full recovery could take up to 12 months. Results are permanent. Some risks that come with jaw reduction surgery are nerve damage and asymmetry.

For a non-surgical option, Botox injections can provide an alternative.

Doctors inject Botox into the masseter muscles, which connect the jaw and cheekbone. The neuromodulator relaxes these muscles and reduces their size over time. The procedure requires no downtime, and patients will only experience some mild swelling. Results are noticeable in a few weeks. This treatment is temporary, and patients will have to go for injections every 4-6 months to maintain the desired results.
