The procedure takes a total of three appointments to complete. At the first appointment, the dentist takes scans of the patient’s mouth. They create a digital mock-up of the final result and decide on a personalized treatment plan for each patient. At the second appointment, the dentist preps the teeth for the veneers. Patients receive local anesthesia, and the dentist precisely files down the teeth to create more space for the porcelain shells. If needed, the dentist can also shorten the teeth to make them appear smaller. Depending on the condition of the teeth, the dentist may choose to do a full-prep, minimal prep, or no prep at all. A full-prep involves removing more enamel than a minimal-prep case.

After the prep is completed, the dentist takes a mold of the teeth. They send this to the lab to create custom-shaped porcelain coverings.

While patients wait for their permanent veneers over the next few weeks, they wear temporary veneers. The teeth may be slightly sensitive during this period, and patients should avoid sugary, acidic, and hot and cold foods and drinks. 

The final procedure requires a local anesthetic and could take a while to complete depending on the number of teeth. Patients can expect up to 3 hours for every ten teeth. First, the dentist loosely fits the permanent veneers and makes minor adjustments. Once the positioning is correct, they slightly roughen the surface of the teeth to help the bond strength of the veneers. The dentist applies a cement adhesive and inserts the veneers. They use a special light to bond the veneers to the natural teeth. Once they are in place, the dentist makes any final adjustments before completing the procedure. Veneers are very durable and can last many years with good care and maintenance.
